Vikings 2024 Preview: O’Connell’s Confidence in Flores and New Additions

In a recent episode of the Scoop City podcast, Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell shared his confidence in the team’s prospects for the 2024 season. Despite the scrutiny surrounding his defensive coordinator, Brian Flores, who joined the team in 2023.

Flores, a controversial coach due to his time with the Miami Dolphins, has been a focal point of criticism..Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa recently labeled his former head coach as “a terrible person”. Despite this, O’Connell remains focused on Flores’ positive impact, praising his defensive expertise and its effect on the team. “Having Flo on my staff is huge because now we don’t have to game plan against him,” O’Connell remarked with a chuckle, acknowledging Flores’ formidable reputation.

O’Connell also highlighted the seamless integration of new players into the Vikings’ schemes and their positive influence on team chemistry. “I would not underestimate the team we’ve put together,” O’Connell told podcast host Dianna Russini. “We’ve added a lot of new pieces that fit very well. That stuff does matter when it comes to 17-plus games trying to win as many as you can.”

During a press conference on August 19, O’Connell provided further insights into the team’s preparation for the season. He discussed the significance of recent roster additions, including veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore. “I’m really excited about adding Stephon Gilmore to our team,” O’Connell said. “He had a great visit with us a few days ago, and we stayed in contact as he worked through his process, ultimately leading to his decision to join us. Having someone as decorated as Stefon, coming off a strong year in Dallas, is a huge boost for our defense.”

O’Connell Expects Big Things from Younger Players

O’Connell expressed optimism about the team’s performance during joint practices and the preseason game that followed. He noted the competitiveness and positive signs from his players, even with key starters sitting out. “We got some really competitive work, two days of really good joint work, and then to come away with a win and see a lot of really good things we were looking for out of our team… it was confirmed watching the tape,” he explained. “A lot of really good individual performances, guys fighting to find roles and a place on this football team.”

He also highlighted the contributions of younger players, noting their emergence as key contributors. O’Connell was particularly pleased with the defensive unit’s performance, emphasizing their ability to challenge the opposing offense during joint practices. “The physicality of getting off blocks and reacting fast and physical to a totally different structure of offense was impressive,” O’Connell remarked. “Our defense was tied together not just on pressures but also in the way they disrupted the opponent’s offense, leading to turnovers and big plays.”

Depth Will be a Big Factor in 2024

As the Vikings prepare for the upcoming season, O’Connell emphasized the importance of depth and competition within the team, particularly in the cornerback room. The addition of Gilmore has strengthened this group. O’Connell made it clear that the battle for playing time and roles remains intense. “There is still a lot to be determined with our final roster and practice squad, but we’ve seen some really good performances out of that room throughout camp,” he said.
